Volunteer Tutor Role
Who can volunteer? Any adult who can read & write.
Purpose
Training
-
To become a certified tutor, volunteers must attend a 8-9 hour pre-service workshop offered every 6-8 weeks by the literacy council.
-
Tutors are encouraged to attend in-service training when possible. These meetings are usually held four time annually.
Responsibilities
-
Encourage your student
-
Meet regularly and punctually
-
Be well-prepared for lessons
-
Fill out monthly reports on your student's progress
Hours
-
Tutors generally meet with students once per week for 1-2 hours. Lesson preparation can take about an hour at first, but this time will decrease as you become more familiar with your student and the instructional materials.
-
Most tutors meet between 9am and 4pm, M-F, but we also have tutors who prefer evenings or Saturdays, which is a plus for working students.
-
Tutors meet at the literacy council office in Collierville or at a public library if that is more convenient for the tutor and student.
Rewards
-
The smile on the face of a student when she understands something she never thought possible.
-
A heartfelt hug from a student who read a sign on the way home that he could never read before.
-
The knowledge that you are helping to make the world a better place.
