High School Equivalency (formerly GED)

About the HiSet

As of April 1, 2016, the State of Tennessee no longer offers the GED test as an option to obtain a High School Equivalency diploma. The HiSET, High School Equivalency Test, is offered in 21 states, including Tennessee. When you pass the HiSET, you earn the high school completion credentials.

There are five parts to the HiSET – math (we provide the calculator), science, social studies, reading and writing. There is one essay writing section, and all other sections are multiple choice. Each section is timed.

The HiSET takes about 7-1/2 hours, but you can choose to take the parts on different days.

You must register for the HiSET at The cost of the test is $75.

For more information about the HiSET, you can visit

The OPT, of Official Practice Test – a state requirement before you take the HiSET

The state requires that you take an OPT, or Official Practice Test, before you take the HiSET. The OPT includes all five sections and is timed. It takes 4-5 hours to complete, and shows you how prepared you are to take the HiSET. It is an assessment; you don’t pass or fail. You must be 17 to take the OPT through the Collierville Literacy Council.

How can the Collierville Literacy Council help me?

Administer the OPT: The Collierville Literacy Council administers the OPT at our office at 167 Washington Street in Collierville, M-Th. Appointment times are at 9:30 am and 10:30 am. On Wednesdays, we also include a 1:30 appointment time. If you would like to take the OPT, please call our office at 901-854-0288.

Collierville Literacy Council charges a $25 administrative fee for the HiSET. When you arrive, you’ll need to bring cash or charge, and a photo ID.

After you complete the test, we will provide your scores that day and discuss your preparedness to take the HiSET.

If your scores show you are prepared, we will give you an OPT form that allows you to take your HiSET within a year after completing the OPT.

Tutoring: If you find you aren’t prepared to take the HiSET after the OPT, the Collierville Literacy Council can match you with a trained, volunteer tutor in one or more areas where you need to practice.

Tutoring is free; we ask that you pay for any books. Tutors will meet with you for one or two hours a week.

We work hard to find a tutor that matches your needs, but there is often a waiting list for tutoring.

The HiSET: The Collierville Literacy Council offers the HiSet at New Direction Church at114 Hwy 72 E., in Collierville periodically, and it is administered by UT Martin.

Our next HiSET Test date is Thursday, November 30, 2017.
