Adult Literacy Programs that Change Lives

The ability to read, write, and speak English allows individuals to unlock a world of possibilities. Increasing literacy skills vastly improves economic opportunities, boosts self-esteem,  improves health disparities, strengthens civic engagement, and is the key to a child's success in school and in life. We provide a nurturing environment that empowers our students to reach their educational goals.

Our programs and projects promote adult education through:

Basic Literacy

Adults unable to read, write, or complete math at a third grade level can get tutoring with us. Our volunteers are trained to help students meet their individual goals for improving their literacy skills.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

We educate adult learners who are not native English speakers through our small group workshops, conversation classes, and one-on-one tutoring. Our coordinators are fluent in Spanish.

High School Equivalency Diploma – HiSET Testing & Preparation

If you are 17 and older, the Collierville Literacy Council will help you take the HiSET test (previously known as the GED) to earn a high school equivalency diploma. We work one-on-one with students to choose the best way to earn your diploma quickly. You’ll begin with an assessment to determine your skill level. Based on the results, you can take advantage of free help with a trained volunteer, small group class or resources to study on your own. While not required, we strongly recommend that you take the Official Practice Test (OPT). Passing the HiSet test provides you with a high school diploma that leads you to a  higher earning power and skills that will benefit you throughout the rest of your life. Without a diploma, you cannot go to college, the military or trade school.

Citizenship Classes

Are you interested in becoming a U.S. citizen? We have qualified and bilingual staff who can help you determine if you are eligible for citizenship. If you are, we can help answer any questions about the naturalization application and then help you study for your naturalization exam.  We offer small group classes and one-on-one tutoring to help you learn about U.S. civics and history and also help you improve your written and spoken English for the exam. Class will include interview skills and practice and help with pronunciation of the required words. All of the material for the class is included. Join us on Wednesdays 6-8 at the University of Memphis, Collierville, Room 138. Call or visit us to register.

Career Readiness

While many of our adults want to earn a diploma or improve their language skills; for some, their main goal is to obtain better employment or build a career. Attend our annual Skilled Labor Trade and Career Fair or participate in “Skills to Pay the Bills” training.
